The importance of Colour: Colour has always played a vital role in the selection and value of gemstones. There has always been a correlation between magical symbolism and the colour of gemstones, which is thought to influence men and women in different ways. Violet indicates hard-work, seriousness and good thinking for men while for women it denotes spiritual love and elevated thinking. Black denotes seriousness, steadfastness and strength in men while for unmarried women it indicates silliness and shallow thinking. However, for married women, black represents loyalty and perseverance in love. For men, green indicates happiness, impermanent hopes and the erosion of good relationships while for women this colour symbolises change, joy and the desire to attain certain goals. Blue denotes elevated thoughts and deep wisdom in men while in women it symbolises steadfastness, politeness and envy in matters of love. Red was connected to revenge, command and authority in a man while for a woman this colour illustrated arrogance, stubbornness and snobbishness. Colourless stones denote religion and spirituality as well as integrity and loyalty in men while on a woman white indicated purity, profound thought and likeability. Yellow pointed to secrecy in a man, as that of a quiet lover, while on a woman it denoted kindness and a giving nature.
Furthermore, it is believed that gemstones gain their magical power through liking to the sun, moon, and planets. Throughout the history, astrologers established a system to interpret the effect of heavenly bodies on human affairs. This system involved the correlation of the zodiac signs with the gods of ancient mythology and their related gemstones. For instance, Mars, the Roman god of war, was associated with strong red of ruby, signifying command and the fire of warfare.
