While there are numerous types of amulets and talismans, the one thing they have in common is that people who used them had belief in their power and that these chosen objects could affect their world. Over time, particular gemstones were ascribed to days of the week, months of the year, zodiac signs and seasons. Certain gemstones were attributed certain powers and healing properties because of their colour. For example, green stones were used to help with eye diseases, reddish stones, such as coral and rubies, were useful against bleeding, blue stones could calm dark spirits and bring light and yellow stones were connected to liver diseases bilious complaints. It was believed that these particular gemstones would bring luck to the wearer and ward of dangers.
Amulets and talismans are increasingly worn today and the symbolism of gemstones have not diminished. This is especially true of the birth month stones. It is common for people to wear pendants or rings sporting the gemstone corresponding to their birth month. These items are still believed to affect the wearer’s life positively, protecting and healing them. It is believed that they radiate with energy. It is important to note that in the past, gemstones assigned to the months were somewhat different to the modern list. For example, the ancient Hindu birthstone for January was the ruby while the modern birthstone is the garnet. Beautiful birthstone jewellery is valued today for its symbolism and meaning, if not for its powers.
Some of the most supposedly powerful gemstones are jade, jet, amber, bloodstone and coral. These have occupied a special place in various cultures throughout history as being extremely powerful and therefore highly coveted. Some gemstones are highly prized as romantic objects. A beautiful talismanic gem is the beryl, supposed to promote honesty and fidelity in a marriage. Sapphire is said to symbolise love, trust and commitment. The moonstone also is thought to symbolise love and passion and inner strength.
It is easy to see why gemstones have been allocated so much power and energy throughout history. Their beauty and inexplicable perfection made them mysterious objects. Today gemstones are still highly valued as indicators of status, suggested symbolism and beauty.
