myths and magical properties of Peridot
|
This beautiful green gemstone was called the ‘gem of the sun’ in the ancient times, due partly to its brilliant colour. The peridot was believed to be able to dispel evil spirits wandering about and was therefore seen as a useful talisman to have around. One interesting method of getting rid of evil spirits was tying a peridot on one’s left arm using donkey hair. This was believed to be highly effective in protecting the wearer from the harm of bad spirits. It was believed that peridots could ease a person’s mind from jealousy, in this way putting the mind at ease and creating a state of calm and contentment. For those suffering with fever, a peridot in the mouth would ease thirst and prevent dehydration. Whether this was believed to work in other contexts is uncertain. Crushed peridot was used as a cure for asthma and was ingested in liquids or in food. It was also seen as a remedy for liver disease.
